Character information

Name | Neku Sakuraba
Fandom | The World Ends With You
Age/Gender | 15; male
Powers |
Neku’s powers are telepathy and power absorption. Neku’s telepathy is exceptionally strong, so strong that he can’t seem to shut it off. While he can’t influence other people’s thoughts or anything like that, he can hear very clearly anything a person might be thinking at a given time. This causes Neku a frequent amount of headaches.

However, he also has a related ability that is a little less developed. Neku, through touch, can absorb a mutant’s power. Physical contact increases his mind reading by ten-fold, so much so that he can understand and use a mutant’s abilities as if they were his own. Unfortunately, he can only hold their power for a limited amount of time and his ability to use it depends on that mutant’s degree of control. Unlike his ability to pick up thoughts, he can easily turn this power on and off. In fact, he has to actively THINK about using the ability before picking up a mutant's power. The mutant he is touching will retain their abilities and not suffer from any ill-effects. Also, when Neku activates this power, his hands will glow faintly for just a second.
Personality |
Neku is far from social. He likes to keep to himself and it is very difficult to get him to open up. Not only that, he doesn’t seem to understand other people at all, despite being able to hear their thoughts. He has a great dislike for most people and tends to be really snippy when he does have to talk to someone.

He is the type of person to follow his own rules and not care about the consequences it has on other people. He has a hard time trusting others and tends to be very pessimistic about life in general.

Neku is also very smart. He is good about picking up on details others might miss. Sometimes he tends to over-think things, but doesn’t like analyzing himself very much. His main passion is for art and music and it is probably one of the few things in the world that can get him to smile.
History |
Neku Sakuraba was born and raised in Japan, very close to Shibuya. He was an only child in a single-parent household, his mother working as a fashion designer. Her career explains both why he grew up near Shibuya and why he was always so interested in art. While Neku was a quiet kid growing up, he could spend hours playing with markers and paints left out by his mother.

Neku didn’t see his mom much growing up. When she was at home she was hard at work in her personal office. This is probably where Neku’s anti-social behavior stems from, but he doesn’t like to overanalyze himself much. Neku grew up to be very independent of others because he couldn’t depend on him mom to do a lot of things around the house. Sometimes it would be up to 6 year old Neku to find his own dinner.

This behavior didn’t translate well into the school setting. Neku didn’t play very well with other kids at school and many of them were intimidated by his quiet, intense stare. Seeing as he couldn’t make any friends, Neku turned to art and music instead. He started following the work of a couple of underground graffiti artists in Shibuya and trying to mimic their creations. Neku was always frustrated with his own work though, since it never seemed to reflect the same passion that the artists’ he admired did.

Somehow, Neku did manage to make a few friends in junior high. He didn’t try or anything, for some reason they just gravitated to him and they hung out at lunch and stuff. Neku didn’t complain too much, but he still stayed mostly to himself. Neku hung out in Shibuya a lot when he became old enough to do so, spending more time there than he did at home. His friends could often be found in the various stores their and they would often stop and get ramen if they had the money.

Of course, this all started to change when Neku’s powers began to manifest. At the age of 14, Neku started to pick up on the thoughts of others around him. Shibuya turned into a nightmare for him because he just couldn’t seem to block out the noise. Eventually, Neku began to despise people in general and shut himself up in his own world. He would spend a lot of time in his room and sit as far away from people as he could at school. Talking to no one and turning his music up as loud as possible to block the noise. Eventually even his friends left him, Neku didn’t have to try to hard to push them away. There was one girl who tried to get Neku to open up to her. She was very persistent and Neku found himself growing annoyed with her. One day, he practically shoved her down the stairs to get away from both her and her buzzing thoughts.

His mother knew something was seriously wrong after that. The school requested that Neku seek counseling and his mother agreed to it. The psychologist he went to found a lot of problems with Neku, but couldn’t seem to connect the dots. Neku’s headaches were only getting worse at this point.

Eventually the psychologist recommended some tests, one of which was to check or some sort of anomaly or x-gene. Neku’s test came back positive. His mother was shocked and more than a little perturbed about finding out her son was a mutant. She tried to hide it, but Neku could, of course, pick up on her thoughts. He debated running away, but his mother happened to hear about a school in America where Neku could get real help.

Before Neku knew it, he was flying overseas to attend some school for mutants.
